My name is Eternity Martis and I am a third year student at the University of Western Ontario, pursuing a Double Honours Major in Women’s Studies and English Literature with a Certificate in Creative Writing. I have a unique and un-juried writing opportunity and I require submissions.
I am writing to you to inform you of a very important campaign that is close to my heart and the hearts of many women and men all over the world: V-Day.
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery. (www.vday.org)
As part of Western’s V-Day campaign, we put on a show called Purple Sex, which I am directing this year. Purple Sex is a series of personal monologues written by Western students and performed in front of an audience, that explores sexuality and how it intersects with gender, liberation, race, class, oppression, love, courage, and strength.
Being a writing and women’s studies student, Purple Sex is an excellent writing opportunity to express yourself and have your material read and performed in front of a live audience. It is an uncensored show in a non-judgmental space. The show gives students the chance to share personal experiences and in turn, help out fellow students and their community who are experiencing similar situations.
Past writers have spoken about their experiences with interracial dating, living in a women’s shelter, inter-partner violence, addiction, sexual assault, coming out, sexual phobias, and double lives, and general sexual experiences of being a university student.
Criteria is a personal piece relating to sexuality no more than 5 minutes (2-2.5 pages approximately). It can be a poem as well. Men and women are both welcome. Obscenity and profanity is allowed as long as it it is not racist, sexist, or offensive in any way. Purple Sex is non-juried and non-competitive. Since it is a ways from London, students can email in their stories so that we can workshop online. Students can also choose to have a skilled actor read their piece or they can read their own piece on stage if they wish.
The show is on January 25th on campus, and we’re in need of writers! Students are also invited to attend the show. My goal this year is to make this show the greatest yet, and get not only UWO students involved but the community as well. I hope to gather many women and men’s stories in the hopes of creating a compilation with them in the future. Stories are due no later than November 9th.
Anyone can enter. Email submissions to Eternity at firstname.lastname@example.org
